Morning Washington, 1904. A train's whistle blew as the locomotive pulled into the station. People greeted each other and went about their work in the bustling streets. Next to the general store a new sign announced a dealership for horseless carriages. On the edge of Morning there was a large cliff. Its steep face cast a shadow on the trees and stream below. A tent was pitched beside the stream where a prospector stood. He carved a wooden figure of himself and his horse. Wood shavings floated down stream under the horse drinking in the water. Suddenly the horse stomped its hooves. The prospector put away the statue and pulled out his gold pan. The man panned where the horse pointed and he found a glittering gold nugget. He told his horse things were going to change for them now that they could settle in this place.
Men with guns appeared and an automobile drove up the trail above the stream. The wealthy man climbed out and pulled a deed for the town from his pocket. He said that he had bought the entire town of Morning and the prospector was trespassing. The men searched his vest and took out the woodcarving and gold nugget. They threw the wood figure into the water where it wedged between two stones. The men gave the gold nugget to the landowner. The rich man said they were going to blast a mine in the far side of the cliff and the prospector needed to clear out of there. The swindler pointed to his automobile and told the prospector that it was a new age. The gold panner's way of life did not exist anymore. He was a ghost.
The prospector patted his horse and said, "If being a ghost means that you are in a place you do not belong or not wanted, then I guess we have been ghosts all our lives." The wealthy man turned to leave and impatiently told his men to begin blasting the mineshaft. He sped off in his motorcar and the men walked away. The horse was stubborn and would not leave. There was a loud explosion behind the cliff. Rocks began to slide down the steep hillside above the stream. The prospector climbed on his horse. They raced out of the stream but falling rocks rained down on them and they were crushed.
