Red and blue lights flashed onto a downtown telephone pole making it look like a modern artist's Christmas tree. A poster stapled to the pole advertised a traveling carnival's visit to the oceanside city. Sirens pierced the foggy night air as police cars raced passed the pole to a jewelry store that was almost destroyed.
